The Long Long Plane Ride

Surviving 18 hours of travel with a 2 year old. DONE.
I'll be honest. I have been living in fear of this flight with Austin since we decided to move to Germany. I would wake up at night in a cold sweat, having dreamt that we were being escorted into German airspace by two F-16 fighter jets due to Austin's behavior. Men with large semi automatic weapons and growling German Shepherds would come onto the plane and berate me for having such a naughty boy. Shiver.
The first flight to Dulles was a breeze, Austin fell asleep as we were taxiing down the runway. I may have allowed myself to get a bit cocky at the ease of flying with a toddler.
The second 8 hour 15 minute flight to Munich? Eh. He was awake FOREVER until finally I put in the Cars movie and kept on insisting he lay down and cover up between Daddy and Mommy. When he finally fell asleep (not without a fight mind you) he was gone for about 3.5 hours. Not to shabby. We only had one serious meltdown, and a few smaller tiffs. Our biggest problem is that Austin is what you might call a "loud talker". So he would be playing with one of the little toys I pulled out of my bag of tricks and playing nicely, but SO loudly. It was killing us. And our neighbors.
The last flight to Dresden to Munich was okay. Except for the time Chris said "we are all going to crash at home" and Austin interpreted it as "we are going to crash ON this flight home". This resulted in him crying loudly and exclaiming that he did not indeed want to crash. Me neither dude. Me neither.
And then we were in Dresden. With our 9 pieces of checked baggage and 6 carry ons. Sweet heavens above how did we have that much stuff? Fortunately Chris' friend Aaron came to pick us up (and all of our crap). Otherwise, there may have been a very angry cab driver. Not that we would have known, since they don't espeakin' the English so well. Just like America!
The best part? When we walked through our front door all of our stuff was here from our overseas shipment! Hooray! It was a bit dusty and disorganized, but it was HERE with us. We dropped all of our stuff and went in search of some food. We ended up getting cheese croissants and heading home for a nap. Man was that the best nap. After we all woke up, we took showers and rode the tram down to the Neustadt area where they were having a city carnival. We sat down at a biergarten for an amazing meal and listened to the Germans sing music from Grease on a nearby stage. It as a bit Twilight Zone- but nice to hear familiar songs. Austin hung in as long as he could, but fell fast asleep about halfway through the meal. I don't think Chris and I were far behind in needing sleep as well. We headed home, worked on getting Austin's room arranged, and hit the sack. Day one done. I'll try to catch you up some with what we have been up to since we arrived later (like unpacking, incorrect food purchases due to label language barriers, etc.). For now, some photos!

Making airplane noises in Yeager Airport.

Easy peasy.

Austin loved the crazy transport vehicles they have at Dulles. They look like Star Wars vehicles...

Austin testing out his new headsets.
And yes, there is chocolate chip cookie on his mouth. The bribery began before we even crossed the ocean. God save us.

And sleep.
Mommy's favorite part of the flight.

Laying in bed for my nap- my new view!

Austin's first tram ride.

Dinner. And a huge bell.

He has NEVER done this before. That was the quietest dinner we've had in a year.

Tram ride home and a very sleepy boy.

Auf Wiedersehen America!

Tomorrow, we three are leaving our beloved United States for our new home in Germany. Personally, I'm excited, nervous, and anxious to get this party started. We have spent months discussing, planning, and speculating. I just want to DO it. We may not have internet access for a short while once we arrive, so I leave you with my last post from America. Below are some photos from our last two months here. Enjoy- and we'll see you in Germany! (Sort of)

We packed up about half of our belongings and put it into storage in NY.
Austin helped with the labeling process.

Austin had his FIRST trip to Chuck- E- Cheese for a birthday party.
What did he NOT do? Eat his lunch.

What DID he do?
Ride this carousel 27 times.

Then Austin's second cousins from his Nonny's side came to visit.
There was quite a bit of popsicle eating THAT week.

These girls are SO sweet.
We love them.

Also on the agenda? A birthday golf trip to Stonewall Jackson Resort for Pop's birthday.

While the golfers were golfing, we non golfers drove around town and spent some time at the pool. Along the way I spotted the Trans- Allegheny Lunatic Asylum (which was featured on Ghosthunters) and snuck in for a 10 minute look see while Austin napped in the car with Nonny. It was wicked cool.

Grandpa was in Charleston for the National Guard and took Austin up to the airport to show him the ropes. Our little guy enjoyed his ride with the nice mechanics thoroughly.

Seeing one of Grandpa's helicopters was cool too!

Actually getting into the helicopter- not so much.

With grandparents come presents that mommy and daddy would never buy in 500 years.
For example, a scooter and flashing helmet.

He's totally rad now.

Austin RUNS everywhere. Do they have track teams for toddlers?

That goose didn't stand a chance.

Amongst all of the excitement, my lovely mother turned 60. To celebrate, she and I took a girls trip to Blennerhassett Island. It was beautiful.

Mom outside of our gorgeous hotel. The Historic Blennerhassett Hotel.

My BFF Molly brought her son Trace down from Morgantown for two days.We had fun, and boy oh boy did they had fun. I missed my friend so much.

The boys did some driving through the grocery store. Nothing but attitude.

Being two means getting to run through the sprinkler in your pajamas.
If I did that? A special vacation in a padded room.

Austin the Hilarious

The other day while at a local bookstore, Austin approached his Nonny with a bright yellow train and his irresistible "buy me this toy" look. Nonny promptly whisked him up to the cash register to purchase the bright yellow train. While waiting their turn, a nice man in a cowboy hat and iguana boots struck up a conversation with Austin.
Mr. Iguana Boots: "That's a nice yellow train you have there. How's a train go?"
Austin: "On a track."
Mr. Iguana Boots: "Wow. He's a literal little guy."
Well- his father IS an engineer...

One morning shortly thereafter- Ellen, Austin and I met my Mom at a large shopping area to pick up a few things and have lunch. Ellen offered to take Austin home to get his nap so Mom and I could spend some more time (money) together. Our exhausted little guy fell asleep on the car ride home, but woke up as Ellen carried him to his bed. Even though there was no protest as she placed him in his pack and play, he ended up talking to himself for quite some time after she closed the door. The conversation became more and more animated with sentences such as:
"Oh no Nonny!"
"Ut oh water."
"Nonny open the door."
and then the piece de resistance-
"OH CRAP!"
Ellen rushed in to the bedroom to find him standing in one corner of his bed pointing to a huge water spot and his empty sippy cup sans lid. He once again unloaded the expression and asked her to pick him up. The poor guy had undone his water sippy cup lid (which I had not screwed on tight enough) and dumped it all over his bed. It was after this that he decided that he does not appreciate damp bedclothes. Lesson learned.

Is this kid a character or what? I wonder where he gets it...

Rewind to Germany Visit

I know, I know. No posts. But I have a great excuse! Austin and I are in WV with the grandparents enjoying basking in their attention, love and present giving. Can you blame me for slacking a bit? I thought I'd play some catch up and show you some more photos from when Chris and I were in Germany house hunting. These are our more fun touristy photos from a few places we visited around town.
I present to you, me officially starting back with blogging regularly.
Let the magic begin.
NOTE: Some of the words are in ORANGE. Click on them and they will take you to some more information about the subject. Not THESE words. The ones below. I know, I'm awesome.

This would have likely made some of our grandparents
nervous back in the day.
I'm just saying.

Q: What does a beautiful old biergarten along the river with a panoramic view
of downtown Dresden need to class things up?

Chris and what may be the tiniest birthday card. Ever.

Currywurst. Embrace the pork and curry.
